Accessibility Statement - Shomrim

At Shomrim - The Center for Media and Democracy, we consider providing an equal, respectful, and accessible digital experience for the entire population, including individuals with disabilities, to be of paramount importance. We invest significant efforts and resources to ensure that our content website and journalistic investigations are accessible, user-friendly, and convenient for all users, driven by the belief that every person has an equal right to access information.

Digital Accessibility Accommodations on the Website

This website has been made accessible in accordance with the Israeli Equal Rights for Persons with Disabilities Regulations (Accessibility Adjustments for Service), 2013, and complies with the Israeli Standard (TI 5568) for Web Content Accessibility at a Level AA standard. This standard is based on the global W3C organization guidelines (WCAG 2.1).

Key accessibility features implemented on the website include:

  • Accessibility Menu (UserWay Widget): The website features an integrated accessibility component that allows users to customize their browsing experience (e.g., text resizing, contrast adjustments, highlighting links, pausing animations, applying readable fonts, etc.).
  • Keyboard Navigation: The website fully supports keyboard-only navigation (using the Tab key and arrows) for users who are unable to use a mouse.
  • Screen Reader Compatibility: Structural adjustments have been made (using hierarchical headings and semantic HTML tags) to assist users who utilize screen-reading software (such as NVDA, JAWS).
  • Context-Based Alternative Text (Alt Text): The website’s articles are managed through a dynamic content management system (CMS). To provide the most credible and accurate information for visually impaired users, the website utilizes the detailed, professionally written journalistic image captions embedded in our articles and automatically mirrors them as alternative text (Alt Text) in the code, making them readable by screen-reading software.
  • Audio Content and Article Narration in Collaboration with the Accessible Culture Center: As part of our organization's vision to make investigative journalism accessible to all sectors of society, "Shomrim" maintains a special collaboration with the Accessible Culture Center, founded by the Central Library for the Blind and Visually Impaired. Within the framework of this partnership, a wide selection of the website’s investigative articles are made accessible through professional audio narration. These audio versions are available to users and are distributed across Shomrim's official podcast channels on leading platforms, including Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and Podbean.

Limitations and Inaccessible Content

We manage a dynamic content website with a vast archive spanning hundreds and thousands of articles, and our process of maintaining and upgrading accessibility is continuous and comprehensive. However, due to the dynamic nature of the site, some historical pages or elements may not be fully accessible yet or are missing complete adjustments (for example: internal archival images that were manually embedded directly within rich-text blocks in the past and are not linked to a specific caption field, or older PDF documents uploaded as part of past investigation materials).

If you encounter any difficulty or accessibility violation while browsing, we sincerely apologize and kindly ask that you contact us so we can remedy and improve the relevant content as quickly as possible.

Accessibility Coordinator and Contact Information

In compliance with legal requirements and to ensure an efficient response, we have appointed an Accessibility Coordinator within the organization. You may contact them directly regarding any questions, technical issues, or suggestions for improvement:
